Thursday 22 October – My Life in the Music Industry by Mike Hurst
Mike was a member of the 60s pop group The Springfields, along with Dusty and her brother, Tom (Mike replaced Tim Fields who was in the original line-up). They were the first British group to have a top 10 record in the USA. After they disbanded, Mike formed a group with Jimmy Page (from Led Zeppelin) and then became a record producer. He discovered Mike Bolan and Cat Stevens, and subsequently produced 50 hit records with them; also Manfred Mann, The Move, Showaddywaddy, Shaking Stevens and many more. He began lecturing on the history of popular music from the middle ages to the present day, having a book published called Every Song Tells A Story. He has been a lecturer for 20 years, and has spoken to WIs, u3as, schools and colleges.

Thursday 26th November – Colin Oakes on The 1926 General Strike
100 years ago this year, a General Strike took place in the UK from 4th to 12th May. It was called by the General Council of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) in an attempt to force the British government to act to prevent wage reductions and worsening conditions for 1.2 million locked-out coal miners. Some 1.7 million workers went out, especially in transport and heavy industry. In part it was a sympathy strike, with many of those who were not miners and not directly affected, striking to support the locked-out miners. The government was well prepared, and enlisted middle- and upper-class volunteers to maintain essential services.
